About Us
Sugar Loaf is a great little family wine company based in the heart of the Marlborough wine-growing region with over 26 hectares of vines and our custom-built production winery.
THE FOUNDERS
Founded in 2004 by the then-23-year-old Kate, Sugar Loaf Wines has been an adventure every step of the way. After studying Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University and several brief stints overseas, Kate moved to Marlborough and got to work. In 2007 the opportunity arose to purchase a vineyard and disused apple cider factory, we set the winery up in time for 2008. The operation has grown with 26ha of vineyards and a purpose-built winemaking facility.
VINEYARDS
Our 26 hectare estate vineyards are home to some of the oldest vines in Marlborough, producing stunning Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Riesling. The vineyards are carefully divided into management blocks specific to soil type, vine age and character. We also select parcels of fruit from a small number of growers across the Wairau and Awatere valleys, growers who share our passion and commitment to producing fine wines.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Kate and David Acland, both come from 5 generations of farmers and growers with a proud history of producing quality food. Today they farm sheep, cattle, honey and wine and a new generation has begun with their 3 young children involved in all of their enterprises.
From this proud history we take our philosophy of farming and growing with a 'light-touch', we take a 100 year view on every decision we make on our farm and vineyards. We are certified sustainable in our vineyards and winery through Sustainable Wine growing NZ and we're farming in the best way we know how with the goal of leaving our lands in better heart than when we began.
OUR TEAM
We are a passionate little team of 6, growing to 10 over the harvest period - we love what we do, making great wines without the fuss.
